16th February 1824 – The Athenaeum club was founded in
London.
The Athenaeum was a gentlemen’s club
(originally) when it was founded in London in 1824. It has had many well known
persons as members and today includes lady members.
The distinctive clubhouse is located at 107 Pall
Mall (at the corner of Waterloo Place) and was designed by Decimus Burton. The
club's facilities include an extensive library / a dining room known as the
Coffee Room / a Morning Room / a Drawing Room on the first floor / a newly
restored Smoking Room - where smoking is not permitted and a suite of bedrooms.
