On this day in UK history:
29th January 1856 – Queen Victoria instituted
Britain’s highest military decoration – the Victoria Cross (VC).
The Victoria Cross is awarded to British and Commonwealth
armed forces for outstanding bravery “on the field of battle”.
Originally the medal was made from the metal of a cannon
captured from the Russians at Sevastopol (1854/1855) – until the supply ended in
1942.
